Woman charged with embezzlement, forgery

A Rock Springs woman faces more than a dozen felony charges stemming from a Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office embezzlement investigation had her initial appearance in court on Friday.

Janette Marie Klapel, 33, was arrested Thursday by county detectives. She is charged with 15 counts of felony-grade theft and forgery.

As described in court documents, Klapel began employment with No Bull Construction as a bookkeeper in September, 2013, when her name was Janette Olds. She married Deputy Sheriff Mike Klapel of the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office Dec. 17, 2015.

On Dec. 21, 2015, the company reported suspicious internal financial activity to the sheriff’s office and detectives put their investigation into motion.

Six pages of court documents related to the 15 counts outline instances of check forgery and fraudulent debit card use Klapel allegedly initiated in a sum of more than $17,000.

During her court appearance on Friday, Circuit Court Judge John Prokos set Klapel’s bond at $20,000 cash or surety.

A media release from the sheriff’s office states Klapel may face additional charges as the investigation continues and noted that Klapel’s husband Mike has not been accused or charged in the case.
