Anniversary celebrated in unique way

Sculpture will commemorate 50 years years of business for the Community Fine Arts Center.

The CFAC in Rock Springs is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The CFAC is a unique collaboration of the city of Rock Springs, the Sweetwater County School District No. 1, and is a department of the Sweetwater County Library System.

Due to this cooperation, residents and visitors alike can enjoy a variety of cultural activities such as performances, concerts, and the permanent art collection owned by the school district. In addition, changing displays of fine art as well as classes and workshops taught by both local and regional artists are regularly offered to the community.

As part of that celebration and to commemorate the importance of the arts in the community, a call for entries from artists is being announced. The Sweetwater County Library Foundation with the CFAC Advisory Board is beginning to raise funds for a commissioned sculpture that will be installed outside the entrance of the center.

This call for artists is for a sculpture with an imposing presence to be installed in the front of the building to help commemorate 50 years of business.

The committee is particularly interested in a sculpture that responds to the landscape, history of the community, or purpose of the building; and are leaning strongly towards something of welded construction, industrial in nature.

The center opened its doors in 1966 by a local science teacher with a great love for art and a vision for his school and community. Its beginning started much earlier - 1939 - when the first painting was purchased to hang in the local high school. Inspired by Mr. Elmer Halseth, students collected nickels and dimes from school carnivals, bake sales and donation jars during the school year which was used to purchase the artwork. This permanent collection of more than 500 original American paintings, prints, works on paper, photographs and three dimensional work, which is now on display for the public to also enjoy.

The call for entries is open to any artists residing in Wyoming. Details are available on the CFAC webpage http://www.cfac4art.com and from the Wyoming Arts Council.
