Zumba class helps seniors stay in shape

On Monday, the Golden Hour Senior Center was busy with ladies doing Zumba.

Zumba Fitness is designed for participants to dance to great music, with their friends while they are burning a lot of calories without knowing it. The whole concept is for participates to have fun and enjoy working out.

The GHSC ladies were busy dancing to songs like Tina Turner's "Rolling on the River" and Elvis Presley's "I'm all shook up."

This was the first time the group had gotten back together since the two-week holiday break. Twelve women were there following the instructors moves. After each song, the instructor would give them time to catch their breath and have some water.

"It's a good workout," Linda Dennison said. "You feel good afterward."

Charlene Miller, who is usually dancing along, was sitting at a table watching the group.

Miller said she had hurt her knee and was waiting for it to heal before she joins the group again.

Normally, there are 15 or 16 ladies dancing to the senior Zumba songs. All of this takes place in the the dining room. As word of mouth about how much fun the class was spread, the Zumba class has continued to increase over time.

Of course, this all has to do with what time of the year it is too.

"Before Christmas we got down to three people," Miller said.

Now, there are a lot of ladies back.

Between songs the ladies would talk about which songs and dances were their favorites and how much fun they were having.

As soon as the instructor started giving instructions on the next dance, they quickly got back into their places ready to learn more.
