Wrestlers prepare for Vernal tourney

The Green River High School Varsity and Junior Varsity wrestlers have been hard at work over the Christmas break preparing for the Tournament of Champions, Friday and Saturday in Vernal, Utah.

"Many of the GRHS wrestlers have been using this break to focus on technique," coach Marshall Rhodes said. "We have added quite a few things and have really tried to fix some of the mistakes we have been making the first month of the season."

The wrestlers took Christmas week off from practice, have been in practice again since Dec. 28. Rhodes said many wrestlers have taken advantage of this time to improve on the areas that they need work on, in preparation for the tournaments to come.

At the Tournament of Champions, varsity wrestlers will compete in an individual tournament. Junior varsity wrestlers will compete in duals Friday and an individual tournament Saturday. Some of the best wrestling teams in Utah will be at the tournament, Rhodes said. There will be about 40 teams from around the area at the tournament.

"Going into the Tournament of Champions in Vernal, I expect all of our wrestlers to compete hard every second of every match, that's how they are taught to wrestle," Rhodes said. "I feel that many individuals on the team have made a jump and I am excited to see where they stand against some great competition."

Rhodes feels the team has made some great progress, but still is not where they need to be in terms of the team goals they have set. The tough tournaments ahead will help to gauge what mistakes they need to fix and where they stand in terms of competition.

"The wrestlers and coaches are excited to get back to competition, that is the best part," he said.
