Wrestlers successful at Warrior Classic in Colorado

The Green River High School wrestling team traveled to Grand Junction and Fruita Colorado to compete in the Warrior Classic this past weekend.

"Overall I am happy with our performance this weekend," Coach Marshall Rhodes said. "We have gained shape and managed to fix some things in practice."

Rhodes said along with technique they still have to work on their toughness and conditioning, but with some hard work it will come around.

There were 38 teams from Wyoming, Colorado and Utah competing in the tournament, and Green River came out in the top five team scores, with a score of 178.5. No other Wyoming team placed in the tournament top five; the other teams in the group were from Colorado.

"It has been about 20 years since the Wolves have won that varsity tournament against some of the best schools in Colorado," Rhodes said. "And to do it without an individual champion says a lot to the strength of the team, everyone contributed."

Individual wrestlers' made a variety of placements at the tournament.

Cyro Montoya, Shandon Welsh, and Brendan Hopkins placed second. Gage Byers placed fourth. Jacob Olsen and Jordan Tucker placed fifth.

Other wrestlers who scored points at the tournament were Caleb Nathan, Nathan McCann, Kaycee Cochrane, Jacob Mortensen, Eric Clingenpeel, Edgar Alatorre, Dylan VanGieson, and Blake Waite.

"I am pleased with where we are right now," Rhodes said. "We have figured out things we need to improve on over the break and we are excited to fix them."

The GRHS wrestling team sets their sights on a tournament in Vernal, Utah Jan. 8 and 9.

Rhodes said he is looking forward to seeing where they are against good competition and to see where they can get better from there.
