Truman Elementary receives a Christmas gift

Tis' the season for giving in Green River. Mission at Castle Rock Rehabilitation Center partnered with the Wesswick Foundation to bring some Christmas cheer on Friday.

The center donated $300 worth of school supplies to Truman Elementary School as well as candy for each student. Every student also received a book for Christmas. The books were donated by Louise Wesswick, founder of the Wesswick foundation.

This is not the first time Wesswick has donated books to a school, but this is the first year she has donated to a Green River school. Wesswick is a Rock Springs native and taught at the University of Wyoming for many years. After retiring in 1990, she returned to Rock Springs where she started her foundation.

"We went to elementary schools in Rock Springs ... and it was so well received, I thought 'Oh this would be a nice thing to do,'" Wesswick said.

It's been a few years since she donated books to schools in Rock Springs. Wesswick lives in The Villa now, part of Mission at Castle Rock Rehabilitation Center. That's where the partnership came in at.

"We wanted to do something community based," Bobbi Jo Drozd, Mission at Castle Rock administrator said.

Drozd said they often host bake sales to raise money because they are a not-for-profit organization.

"As much as we're raising money, we want to give," Drozd said.

It was Wesswick's idea to start with the schools, she said.

"I've been a teacher my whole life and so books have always been important and always will be, so when anything comes up that has to do with books, I'm in it," Wesswick said.
