Kids learn bus safety with Buster

Harrison Elementary school children had the chance to learn about bus safety Tuesday, with Buster the Bus. Buster is a miniature bus that travels to elementary schools, teaching them about bus safety.

Second graders at Harrison Elementary learned bus safety from Buster with some magic numbers. The magic numbers are numbers to remember when getting on and off the bus to stay safe.

The first magic number is five, for how many minutes to arrive at the bus stop before the bus is scheduled to arrive.

The next magic number is three, for waiting for the bus three giant steps away from the sidewalk curb.

Then when getting off the bus, the magic number is 10, for walking ten step away from the bus on all sides, and when crossing the bus to stay 10 steps away from the bus.

An important key to remember after getting off the bus, is to never go back to the bus. Never. Student Bus Safety bus driver Lavonne Wadsworth, who voices Buster the Bus says children get injured or die every year from going back to the bus, from traffic. When the bus is finished dropping off kids at the bus stop, the bus turns off the lights and pulls in the bus stop sign and is on its way to the next bus stop. Cars don't see easily notice children who come back to the bus stop after the bus has gone.

Buster the bus urges kids to never go back to the bus for anything left or forgotten on the bus; the bus driver will hold the item for safe keeping for the child.

"Whatever you dropped, whatever you left, it's not as important as your life," Wadsworth said.
