Notes from Town Square: GR's Expedition Island

Expedition Island - A National Historic Landmark in the heart of Green River. One might ask, what does it mean to be recognized as a National Registered Historic Landmark? To be listed the site must possess an exceptional value in commemorating a part of history to the United States. The Island obtained this status a mere 100 years after the famed river expeditions of John Wesley Powell in 1869 and again in 1871. Powell, a U.S. Army Major in the Civil War, launched his 1869 river adventure in May; Wyoming was not declared a territory until July of that year. The second launch in 1871 was 19 years before Wyoming, the 44th state, was granted statehood into the Union.

Expedition Island was the launching site for Powell’s’ Expeditions down the Green River, continuing down the Colorado River, through the Grand Canyon and exiting from the Virgin River in Nevada. These expeditions were considered to be the last unexplored, large unknown land area in the continental United States. It was during these expeditions that mapping of river systems was created and the Grand Canyon was documented.

A monument on the Island states in part, “... On May 24, 1869, Powell-Colorado Expedition of ten men and four boats strong, embarked from the environ on a voyage of adventure, resulting in civilizations first definite knowledge of this continuous last unexplored major river drainage out of the still shaded, but no longer unknown depths, of that rivers grand canyon came, 98 days later six tattered river veterans to triumphantly beach two water worn and rock mauled hulks...”

In the warmer months, while visiting this expansive park located at 475 South Second East, perhaps you would like to take a minute and enjoy the playground, have your lunch at one of the four picnic shelters or launch your river float from one of the many river access points. Perhaps you would prefer to tryout the kayak water features near the south east tip of the island, or go tubing in the slower north channel, then again it may be that you simply want to take a stroll along the .25 mile paved walking path and enjoy the nature.

Many an event has been held at this historic location, viewed as a community gathering spot.

It would be surprising if one hasn’t partaken of this location as it has been home to several annual events, i.e., The Riverfest, Art on the Green, Quilting on the Green, Crystal Classic. There have been many weddings, birthday and company parties held in the pavilion as well as in the park. And I am certain many can recall kicking up a heel on the dance floor a time or two.

How many can go back a bit further and recall roller skating here on a fun filled weekend of days gone by?
