Wolves football attracts large numbers

Numbers for the Green River High School Football team are larger than in years past, according to head coach Don Maggi.

This year, the football team was able to recruit 59 sophomores through seniors and 28 freshmen into the 2015 team.

“I think we’re off to a good start,” Maggi said.

He said part of the larger recruitment comes from team members recruiting their friends to the team. He believes the other reason for the larger numbers comes from increased student interest. Maggi said different classes tend to have different interests, which tends to reflect in recruitment numbers for various sports.

Maggi said several students returning to the football field have taken a sabbatical from the sport, not joining the team during the last season in favor of other activities.

Maggi’s goal for the season is to make it to the 4A playoffs. While the team did receive its first loss Friday, the game is a pre-conference game not reflected in the division standings.

Maggi said the team performed well during their first live action against Lander and Mountain View and said the defense played well against Riverton.

Maggi says the team will work on their play throughout the pre-conference games to ready themselves for their opponents.

Green River’s first 3A game is in Powell Sept. 25.
