Wrestlers compete in off-season matches

Competing in a total of 132 matches, 13 wrestlers from Green River recently competed in Paonia, Colo. against teams from Colorado, Utah and Nebraska.

Coach Marshal Rhodes said some of the wrestlers competed in as many as 14 matches during their trip.

"That is a lot of wrestling in a short time period," Rhodes said.

He said the group, consisting of junior high and high school wrestlers, are putting forth effort to improve during the off season. He believes off-season competition like the matches in Colorado, will aid the team for the coming wrestling season.

"Although they were tired and sore, each wrestler improved throughout the course of the weekend and it will pay dividends down the road," Rhodes said.

The 13 wrestlers competing were Trea Fantin, Justin Flores, Kaden Lloyd, Cyro Montoya, Nathan McCann, Gage Byers, Kaycee Cochrane, Jacob Mortensen, Shandon Welsh, Caleb Lawson, Dylan VanGieson, Jordan Tucker and Gabe Bunderman. Rhodes said some of the wrestlers were unable to attend, but plans to take a larger group of 27 wrestlers to compete in Laramie next week.

"I am excited about how the boys are trying to improve, that is what will keep the program headed in the right direction," Rhodes said.
