State quilt show comes to county

The Wyoming State Quilt Guild is hosting the 2015 Quilt show in Rock Springs this year.

Guild Co-chair Nena James said the event will take place at Western Wyoming Community College on June 25-28.

James said this is the first time in the last five years that the quilt show will be in Sweetwater County. Rock Springs, the home of 56 nationalities is also known for a historic event, the 1885 Chinese Massacre. Another historical event the Quilt Wyoming 2015 Committee wanted to highlight is the Heart Mountain Japanese interment camp in Park County in World War II. The state’s cultural diversity is the reason the committee chose to focus on the Asian influence in Wyoming.

James said this is why the theme is East Meet West in Southwest Wyoming. To keep the theme in mind a 2015 Opportunity Quilt called “Asian Harmony” designed and quilted by Nancy vase, was created to reflect the beauty and tranquility associated with Asian culture. This piece was pieced by Holly Burke, Becky Morrison and Jeanne Allen. The hand applique was done by Mary Jane Matthews.

This quilt, which features a crane, which is the symbol of fidelity, and three Japanese symbols, which mean peace, life and art. Tickets for this will be available for sale throughout the event; and the drawing will take place June 28.

According to the wsqg.org, the quilt display will be open for participants and the general public, on June 26 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and June 27 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The vendor mall will be open June 25, from 6:30-8 p.m. and June 26-27 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The quilt show will also have classes each day featuring national teachers Laura Heine and Annette Kennedy. Heine has been quilting and teaching for more than 25 years. He is known for her machine quilting, use of color, design and impression collage quilts.

Kennedy is known for her pictorial art quilts and how to quilt patterns from photographs.
