Lady Wolves earn consolation championship

"We're ready," player McKenzie Lucas said.

"We know that we can beat Rock Springs because we've done it, we just have to keep our heads and play our game," player Payton Bartlett said.

And they were ready. They kept their heads and played their game. And won.

The Green River High School girls soccer team took fifth place in the state soccer tournament last weekend in Rock Springs.

They made their goal, the consolation championship, which is the highest GRHS has placed in state soccer. To get to that point, they had to beat multiple teams from across the state, including their neighbor rivals, Rock Springs High School.

They knew it wouldn't be an easy win, they would have to fight for it, and they did.

"We have played RS this year and each time they have improved. We had watched them play East and took them into overtime. We knew they had stepped up their game and the momentum would carry over to the next day when they played us. We prepared for a battle and had to fight hard," head coach Tracy Wyant said.

"They have a speedy forward they play most every ball through so we knew we had to shut her down. We played tough defense and a smart defense to stop the speed of Madisyn Cantrell. The rest was playing smart, fast soccer, which I felt we did."

Green River won the game against Rock Springs, 3-1; eliminating the Lady Tigers from the tournament.

Their journey to earn the consolation championship was not over yet. They had one more team to beat.

"After beating RS we knew we would get one of the Casper schools which turned out to be Natrona. We had played them three times prior and started to learn their strengths and weaknessed. We played smart, physical, fast soccer," Wyant said.

"We never gave up or lost sight of our goal, which was to win the consolation championship. That is the highest Green River soccer has ever placed at state. We were proud of that and are out to break that record next year."

Green River won the game against Natrona, 2-1; earning the Lady Wolves a fifth place finish and the consolation championship.
