Rust, Love, Givens and Dewey nab 2015 4A All-State honors

The GRHS Track and Field Team had a memorable state meet in Casper last weekend, coming away with four individual all-state awards and five all-state performances.

Leading the way was Senior Dylan Rust who captured two individual state championships in both shot put and discus. Rust became the first male in school history to win both throwing events at the state meet. On Friday, he won the discus title with a throw of 159’8” and captured the shot put title on his last throw Saturday with a toss of 50’2”.

Senior teammate Hayden Love also captured all-state honors finishing second in the discus with a toss of 146’4”. Love also medaled in the shot put with a throw of 45’1.75”.

For the girls, Junior Josie Givens out sprinted a tightly packed group of five during the last 100 meters to capture the 800-meter title in an exciting finish Friday morning with a time of 2:21.67. Givens also picked up another medal on Saturday in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:25.41 She is the first girl to win a distance event at the state meet since Cheryl Harmon captured the 800 meters in 1998.

Andri Dewey capped an impressive freshman year as she earned all-state honors in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.20 along with picking up a fourth-place medal in the 400-meter run with an impressive time of 58.39. Dewey also anchored two sprint relays which medaled.

Senior Holly Huber finished out a great career with a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles Saturday morning with a time of 15.84. Huber earned medals in the hurdle event all four years of her high school career.

Junior thrower, Emily White, earned an eighth-place medal in the discus throw with a toss of 107’9”

“We had a great weekend with a lot of success stories. Even the kids who didn’t medal performed well. We had some younger kids who gained valuable experience that will help them down the road,” head coach Steve Boyd said.

The Lady Wolves also earned medals in all three relay events. Members of the 4x100-meter relay which placed eighth were: junior Hayley Henderson, seniors Kasey Turnbull and Huber- and Dewey. The 4x800-meter relay team also placed eighth. Members of that team were freshmen Kaleigh Allison and Cassie Newcomb Senior Nicole Davis, and Givens. The 4x400-meter relay placed-seventh consisted of Givens, Newcomb, Huber, and Dewey.
