Helping the community

An interest in outdoor activities led Braxton Davis to join the Cub Scouts.

The 10th-grade student has been a member of Boy Scout Troop 19 for the past four years.

Davis said he wanted to join the scouts, not just for all of the activities, but because he got to do a lot of outdoor stuff away from his mom and dad.

Some of the activities Davis has participated in over the years include garbage clean ups, food drives, cementing banner poles and other fun activites.

“My favorite projects were the ones were we would make trails look nice again,” Davis said.

“I wanted to do something that people would walk by; and say ‘that looks really nice.”’

Davis is proud to have earned 21 merit badges, attended 20 camp outs, donated countless service hours and learned valuable leadership skills.

Davis contacted the city when he was thinking about a community-service project for his Eagle Scout award.

“When I contacted the city, one of the (things) that they needed to get done was to have banner poles cemented and that sounded like a fun project to work on,” Davis said.

Once the project was selected, Davis got a group of Boy Scouts together to plan and carry out the project.

The group mixed cement, poured it into five-gallon buckets and then put long poles into the middle of the buckets. The poles have hooks at the end of them where the banners can be attached.

When the project was complete, the scouts were happy to have something that displays banners. This means the community will be able to see what event is taking place at a specific place by looking at the banners being displayed on the poles.

Davis said he was told the banner poles may be used in front of the Golden Hour Senior Center and the Green River Chamber of Commerce buildings.

When Davis is not busy with the scouts, he is swimming, lifeguarding or playing in the band. He said he likes almost any fun activity that has to do with water.
