Rulon Gardner gives back

In 1989 Rulon Gardner finished first at the annual Bill Thoman Memorial Tournament.

Twenty five years later, Gardner returned to Green River High School. The 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist was at the school last week working with local wrestlers.

Lincoln Middle School Assistant Principal Darren Heslep said he's known Gardner for years and he has been working to bring him to town.

Along with working with younger wrestlers, Heslep said Gardner also gave a speech to LMS students.

While the location of the high schools are different, Gardner said just being in Green River brought back a lot of memories.

"Green River was the toughest tournament by far. State championships were nothing compared to winning the Bill Thoman," he said.

Prior to beginning his wrestling clinic, Gardner said it was a great opportunity to come and see the kids.

"As an Olympian I can give back to them. This is a dream for me. When I was in school I remember seeing a kid who wrestled in college and just how inspired I was." Gardner said. "I'll teach them every skill they need to know. I'll teach them how to win the medals. They just have to be willing to put the time in and to commit and have the desire. If they're wanting. I'm willing to teach."

It is also very important to Gardner for wrestling to be strong in the Cowboy state.

He said there needs to be more great olympic wrestlers and more olympic wrestlers from Wyoming.

"I'm committed to help these guys and that's why I'm here," he said.
