Throwers spark Wolves to strong finish

The Green River High School track team had some strong individual performances at the Alpha Invite Track Meet last Thursday and Friday in Orem, Utah.

Head coach Steve Boyd said they were on spring break so they didn't have a full team, but it was a true twilight meet and the kids got the opportunity to run under the lights.

"Which was a neat experience for them.  We rarely get the opportunity to run under the lights," Boyd said.

Senior Dylan Rust took first in the discus with a personal best and a new meet record toss of 153-3.

Senior Hayden Love placed fourth, senior Rob Hunter was seventh.

In the shot put, Rust took third, Love was fourth, Hunter fifth and senior Paul Wright was eighth.

Boyd said the boys throwers accounted for 33 team points and they ended up in sixth place as a team out of 38 schools at the meet.

For the girls, junior Emily White led the way with a fourth place finish in the discus, and an eighth place finish in the shot.

Boyd said her discus throw was a personal best and that freshman Andri Dewey continues to impress, taking seventh the 400-meter run, one tenth of a second from the automatic state qualifying mark, and she also ran a great anchor leg on the 4x400 relay.

Junior Josie Givens was eighth in the 800-meter run, her time of 2:24.99 just missed the automatic state qualifying mark by less than four tenths of a second.

The girls 4x400 meter relay finished in seventh place. The team consisted of Givens, senior Kasey Turnbull, freshman Cassie Newcomb and Dewey.

As a team, the girls placed 20th with 11 team points.

Boyd said there were also some other noteworthy performances from the meet. Junior Shawn McGuire had a personal best time in the 800 meters and senior Nicole Davis ran a personal best time in the 3200 meters.

Boyd said seniors Sarah Herd and Turnbull had good races in the hurdles just missing the finals in the 100-meter hurdles.

"They are ran great, both three stepped the whole flight of hurdles for the first time and ran personal best times," he said. "Kasey (Turnbull) also looked strong in the 300 meter hurdles again. She is way ahead of where she was at this point last year."

This week the team will travel to the Rock Springs Invite. The meet will start Saturday at 9 a.m.
