Wolves soccer starts season Friday

The Green River High School boys and girls varsity soccer teams won’t have to venture far for their first game of the 2015 season.

The two squads will kick off the year Friday with home games scheduled against Evanston.

The boys game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m., and the girls are slated to begin at 4 p.m. Both games will be played at Wolves Stadium.

The teams will then travel to Casper Saturday for a Jamboree- style tournament at Kelly Walsh High School. The format will have each team playing three games with two 26-minute halves.

Both programs will be coming into the season after stellar 2014 campaigns. The girl’s team won 19 in a row to start the year, and the boy’s team won the 4A West Regional Tournament and finished third at 4A State Tournament in Rock Springs.

Going into the games this week, Green River head coach Chris Bieber said he is not quite sure what expect when they take the field, but with a conference game against Evanston, and then games against Sheridan, Gillette, and Riverton in Casper, they will find out real quick.

Since he took over as head coach, Bieber said the team has progressed each season. He said they lost a lot of seniors last season, but 10 freshman joined the team this season and that should continue the progress.

A little over a week into practice, he said things have been going well until Mother Nature threw them a curve ball the last several days.

LADY WOLVES

There is an old saying that champions are made in the offseason, and for the Green River High School Lady Wolves, there was plenty of work done after the 2014 season ended.

Green River head coach Tracy Wyant said there was a good core group of girls that have been working hard on the turf field at Wolves Stadium.

“I drive by and see them all the time. The other day I saw girls running sprints, and this was during the preseason,” she said.

Following a difficult ending to 2014 with two losses at the state tournament, Wyant said there is a sense among the team that they need to get a little bit better and put in a little bit more work during the offseason.

After the conference opening game against Evanston, the Lady Wolves will also have a difficult test at the Jamboree in Casper.

They are scheduled to play Riverton, Natrona, and Sheridan. The games against Riverton and Natrona will not count in the conference standings.

Wyant said she was hoping they would get a couple more teams from the east side of the state at the Jamboree, but she is ready to go and get a game under their belts.

Unsure of her starting lineup, Wyant said this weekend will be trial and error.

“Hopefully we can come up with some wins,” she said.

Following this weekend of action, the teams will not play again until April 9 at rival Rock Springs.
