Seattle bound: Pokes earn tourney bid

It’s time to get out the dancing shoes and perhaps a glass slipper. The Cowboys are going dancing.

After an amazing three-day run to win the Mountain West Conference Tournament, the University of Wyoming men’s basketball, was one of 68 teams to qualify for the 2015 NCAA Basketball Tournament.

The 12th-seeded Cowboys (25-9) will open the tournament as underdogs Friday at 11:40 a.m. against fifth-seeded Northern Iowa (30-3). The game is part of the tournaments East Regional and will take place at Key Arena in Seattle. The game will be televised on TBS.

Wyoming head coach Larry Shyatt said he was happy for all of his players to get into the tournament, especially the senior class who won 80 games in four years.

Following a thrilling 45-43 win over San Diego State last Saturday to win the MWC Tournament, Shyatt said it was exciting for everyone to be able to celebrate on the entire 94-foot court filled with brown and gold. He praised the fans who attended the tournament.

“It had to be the envy of the rest of the league when you looked at the stands in Vegas,” he said.

Shyatt added that the weather was good in Vegas and was also good for a NCAA Tournament watch party hosted Sunday by the University.

“Whenever our people can get there physically, we’ve got about as loyal and excitable fans as anybody in the country,” he said. “There was a lot of brown and gold helping us celebrate the NCAA berth yesterday.”

Wyoming’s ticket allotment to the NCAA Tournament game sold out in 44 minutes.

Shyatt said that Northern Iowa and Wyoming are similar statistically and that players go to both schools for the right reasons.

“These two guys are a breath of fresh air,” he said.
