Cheeks in the seats: Get out and support Green River wrestling

Friday night, the Green River High School wrestling team will take to the mat for their second home dual of the season against a strong Star Valley team.

There would be nothing better for the team to look into the stands and see a standing room only crowd to cheer them on. Green River is known across the state as a wrestling town and there are 11 state titles to back it up. It’s time to fill the gym.

If you haven’t been paying attention, the program has been gaining momentum over the past several seasons and are off to a solid start to the 2014-15 season.

In the past few weeks, the teams has started to come together and the results have been some impressive results starting with the team title at the Bill Thoman Jr. Memorial Tournament. The Wolves went a perfect 7-0 in duals at their annual tournament. It was an impressive weekend for Green River and they followed it up last weekend finishing second out of 30 teams from four states at the Tiger-Grizz Tournament in Idaho Falls.

Green River had two first-place finishers at the Idaho tournament. Cyro Montoya and Cole Verner were both champions and are currently ranked by http://www.wyowrestling.com as the number one wrestlers in their weight class.

A defending state champion, Verner is undefeated on the season and if you haven’t seen him on the mat, your missing out on one of the best wrestlers in the Rocky Mountain region.

The website also lists Gage Byers as the number one wrestler at 126 pounds and Green River as the second ranked team in the state behind Campbell County.

Last season the Wolves finished second in the state to the Camels.

It won’t be easy, but if their is a team to stop the 12-year state title run by Gillette, but if there is a team to do it, it’s Green River.

It will be really interesting to see how the team progresses over the next few weeks, but if the past couple weeks are any indication, the future could be very bright.

It’s time now to get out and support the hard working kids and coaches who put in countless hours in the wrestling room.
