Green River tightens defense

In just one game under the direction of interim head coach Rick Carroll, the Green River High Schools girl’s basketball team showed amazing growth on the defensive side of the floor.

In their second matchup of the season against Star Valley, the Lady Wolves showed marked improvement on defense, holding the Lady Braves to 28 fewer points than the first matchup in December that ended with a final of 63-26.

While Green River lost the game 35-18, Carroll said the girls were extremely competitive and he was really pleased with the way they played defense.

The new head coach said the team had four practices with the new staff before the Star Valley game. He said they did well with a zone defense they had been working during the first few practices.

“With four days of work they did a really good job with the half court set,” Carroll said.

After taking over the program from former head coach Aric Hanusa, Carroll said he wanted to see effort and great improvement on defense, and he saw that against Star Valley.

“The effort was great. With defense and rebounding the two thing you is a great effort and that’s what we got,” he said.

After the game, Carroll said Green River needs to figure out how to get some better shots.

He said he wants to keep the girls with a positive attitude and see if they can score some more points.

“Right now we got to find the offense that will work for these guys,” he said.

In the game against the Lady Braves, Green River had 20 turnovers. Carroll said they need to cut down on the amount of turnovers. He said the team has a tendency to bounce pass too much and that’s something he has never liked.

“But that’s something we can fix,” he said.

He said against Star Valley he saw some positive signs with the press and they were able to take away the ball four or five times.

Green River was led in scoring by Emily White and Taylor Stoeger who both had six points.
