City changes job requirements

The Green River City Council decided to change the job requirements for its city administrator position, allowing people who have equivalent experience in the private sector an opportunity to apply for the position.

Interim City Administrator Chris Steffen said the change was made to accommodate applicants who didn’t have municipal experience. The job will be advertised for another 10 days, with any applications submitted going to the hiring committee. Steffen also said previous applications wouldn’t be discarded after the change is publicized.

Councilman Gary Killpack said the council isn’t changing the requirements to seek one particular candidate and asked if the language requiring executive-level experience was too limiting.

“It can be fairly broadly interpreted,” Mayor Pete Rust said. “We all discussed this and agreed at the time.”

Rust said he believe’s he had a mandate from the city’s residents when he was elected to seek candidates from within Green River first.

Cari Kragovich, the city’s human resources director, said the requirement would allow someone who may have run an industrial plant or worked as a mine manager.

Councilman Allan Wilson said he thinks the change should have occurred with the previous council, questioning why the change had to occur after the application period closed.

However, Rust said the seating of the new council is a perfect time to revisit the position’s requirements.

Rust said the hiring committee has discussed applicants in two executive sessions so far.

Because those applications involve potential employees, a list of applicants can’t be released to the public.
