Pokes preview: Looking for road victory

The University of Wyoming men’s basketball team rebounded from their first loss of the year in impressive fashion with a 70-35 victory Sunday over Regis University.

Things won’t get any easier for the Cowboys in their second road game of the season when they travel to play California (7-1) tonight at 9 p.m. In their first road game of the season last Friday, Wyoming (8-1) was defeated by SMU, 66-53.

The Cal Bears come into the game with four players averaging in double figures, led by Tyrone Wallace who averages 19 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.

Wyoming head coach Larry Shyatt said that their top four players present a lot of problems.

“Anytime anyone has a lot of options rather than one, that presents a lot of defensive dilemmas,” he said. “This a game that’s personnel drive because of that.”

The fifth-year Wyoming coach compared the Cal game to last’s Friday night’s game against SMU where the Cowboys had a four-point lead midway through the second half before a 18-1 Mustang run to seal the victory. Junior guard Nic Moore led SMU with 25 points.

Shyatt said SMU had two post players averaging double figures going into the game and they did a good job against their interior players, they just had a guard that was absolutely on fire.

He said that going back and watching film on Moore, there was a level of difficulty in the shots he made.

When facing teams with multiple options, Shyatt said you try to take away whatever you think is the most most important thing.

The Cowboys game against California will be their tenth game since Nov. 16. Shyatt said because of this they had not had a lot of time to add new entires, but hopefully, will be able to add or work on a few Monday at practice and maybe that will help them give them a quick strike offensively when needed.

He said nine games in a short amount of time has been healthy, but it has also been unhealthy because they have not been able to practice or add anything new.

“That’s what we’ll focus on today,” Shyatt said Monday.

The game tonight will be broadcast on the PAC 12 Network and is also available through the PAC 12 Network webpage.
