Johnson wins state award

Lincoln Middle School student Anthony Johnson is an avid Denver Broncos fan and according to his dad Chad, he lives and breaths football.

The eighth-grader will soon get the opportunity of a lifetime when he gets to compete at the Broncos Indoor Practice Facility in Dove Valley, Colo. and be recognized on the field during Denver's Dec. 7 game against the Buffalo Bills at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium.

Earlier this month, Johnson won first-place at the Wyoming State Championship for the NFL's Punt, Pass, and Kick contest.

According to Chad Johnson, to qualify for the event, Anthony will compete against other top finishers from Montana, Idaho and Colorado.

Going into the state competition, Anthony said it was probably the most nervous he's ever been.

He said when he got to the event there was a lot of people competing, but was able to start good with his punt.

"It was a very good punt. Probably the best punt I've ever had," Anthony said.

Shortly after the competition, he was announced as the winner and he said was even more surprised than when he won the local competition in September.

"It shocked me a lot more than in Green River. I just won Wyoming. I was not expecting that at all," he said.

This year wasn't the first time he had competed at the Green River competition and said in the past he had not really done that great.

Anthony said this year he started working out more and started to get a lot better.

In preparation for the team championship in Denver, Anthony said he's been going to the football field every day after school and his father is helping him out.

His goal for the team championship is to be as accurate as can be and to keep the ball in the lines.

A wide-receiver last year for the Monroe team, Johnson said he is best at passing.

When the Broncos take on the Bills, it won't be the first time he's been to see them play at home, but he said that he never thought in a million years that he would someday be on the field.

Anthony said that Wes Welker is probably his favorite player, and it's going to be really cool to be able to attend the competition and game.

"Not everybody gets to experience that. Not everyone can say they went down on the field," he said.
