Freshman hope for win five

The Green River High School freshman football team will be gunning for their fifth win of the season when they conclude the 2014 campaign Friday afternoon against Worland.

The Wolves will come into the game 4-3 on the season following a heartbreaking 34-32 overtime loss Monday against rival Rock Springs.

Looking back at the first seven games, head coach Tim Cassity said it’s been a good season, with a lot of close and exciting games.

“These kids are very coachable and very hard workers. They also get along well with each other,” he said.

Despite only having around 24 kids come out for the team, he said the coaches could not ask for better kids to work with.

“We have great kids at our school,” he said.

Cassity also feels it will also make the year a lot better if they are able to end it with a win.

“The great things about these kids is they are very competitive and they expect to win. They’ll be ready,” he said.

Green River started the year at 3-0, before losing consecutive losses to Star Valley and Jackson.

Cassity said that the Wolves are not a big team and those two squads are very good and very physical.

On this year’s team, Cassity said there are some very skilled athletes at quarterback, running back and receivers.

He said they also have a group of hard-working linemen, that have gotten a lot better as the year has gone on.

“They have worked hard and have a good attitude. We just don’t have the 6’4” freshman like Star Valley and Jackson,” Cassity said.

In the loss Monday to Rock Springs, Cassity was pleased with the play of his line.

“We ran really well against Rock Springs and it’s because of the line -- it’s getting better,” he said.

The game Friday against Worland is scheduled to kickoff prior to the varsity game at 2 p.m at Wolves Stadium.

Members of the 2014 team were Dan Mondragon, Gavin Heiser, Chance Hofer, Brody Belcher, Cole White, Cruz Lucero, Devin Love, Cameron Morris, Trey McGhee, Carter Malec, Chance Anderson, Candon Croft, Nick Froats, Tailor France, Guy Vandenberg, Jacob Allen, Alex Davis, Cody Bryant, Kevin Bowles, Trey Montoya, James McCarter, Placido Mena, Ethan Irons, John Makie, Ty Sturlaugson and Joe Pizzie.
