City explains billing snafu

Staff Report

Residents opening their water bill this week may have been dismayed at the suddenly high amount they were being charged.

Councilman Tom McCullough said he received “many, many complaints” from residents complaining of a $30-40 increase on their water bill. McCullough said his bill also featured the sudden increase.

According to Acting City Administrator Chris Steffen, the problem came about due to an employee taking time off and ultimately reading the water meters later than usual. This resulted in the city billing on a 42-day cycle as opposed to the regular 30-day cycle.

“We’re back on track for next month,” Steffen said Tuesday night.

He said residents can expect to see a normal or lower bill next month.
