When he received a call from dispatch saying there was a bear in the ditch along Uinta Drive, he thought someone had found the remains...

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Sep 3, 2014

While they may not know her by name, most Green River residents will recognize Laurie Macioszek. For years, Macioszek worked at the city’s lone grocery store as a checker. What they may not know is that behind her smiling face, was someone who has spent the last 10 years in a heroic battle against cervical cancer. This weekend, Green River residents will be able to help her battle at the Strength for Laurie Cervical Cancer 5K Walk/Run. The event will take place Sept. 6 starting at 9 a.m. at Expedition Island. • Our view: Keep e-cigs from city youth

    Sep 3, 2014

One of the biggest topics cities have worked to deal with during the last few years is how to legislate vaporizers and e-cigarettes. The devices are a replacement for tobacco-based products, often touting them as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes. While some places have taken to legislating them the same as tobacco products, Green River and much of Wyoming haven’t addressed the issue. One of the problems associated with e-cigarette legislation is there tends to be a legal grey area regarding underage usage of the products. While t...

  • Letter: Hunters should act like sportsmen

    Sep 3, 2014

Dear Editor: As a lifetime Green River resident and hunter I write this letter in disappointment. I take pride in the city and the people who live here. Residents enjoy the outdoor activities that are abundant in this area, and each September and October the sportsmen and hunters enjoy going on the big hunt. In the past this meant tromping through the mountains looking for the elusive six point elk or a trophy mountain deer. This has changed for many. For the last nine or 10 years, the family ranch I grew up on has become bombarded with...

  • Get moving and get reading

Pat Horn, Sweetwater County Library System|Sep 3, 2014

With less lawn watering required and other outdoor projects rained out, these recent summer storms have allowed for extra reading. For me, nothing is more satisfying than to read an enthralling account as lightning, thunder, and watery percussion provide soundtrack to fade the world into the background while pulling me deep into the story. And that allowed more entries in our Adult Summer Reading program. Wasn’t it fun? Many adults completed at least five books to receive a mug with the welcome commands: EAT, SLEEP, READ. Since those are alread...

  • An adventure in sunny California

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Sep 3, 2014

Last week’s edition of the Green River Star featured a column I wrote about all the places I would like to travel. Well I’d now like to say that other than a trip I’ve already paid for to Las Vegas, I don’t plan on going anywhere out of state for a long time. As I had mentioned in the column, I was going to San Francisco and I was excited to get to the airport and get out of town for a few days. The line for security looked long, but in no time I was through the line and ready to catch my flight...

  • The second year should be easier

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Sep 3, 2014

As I drove away from my sons’ daycare, I was anxious about how one son’s day would go. Matthew, who is four and my oldest, started his second year of preschool at the Sweetwater County Child Developmental Center. I think I was more anxious than he was. However, at least this year I wasn’t fighting back tears. So that was an improvement. Still, I wondered what time the STAR bus would pick him up and if he would like his new teacher and classmates. Soon, I found myself at the Green River CDC a...

  • County successful with nuisance plan

    David Martin, Editor|Sep 3, 2014

A complaint-driven program devised to mitigate nuisance properties is finding some success in Sweetwater County. Speaking yesterday at the Sweetwater County Commissioners’ meeting, Jim Zimmerman, the county’s nuisance officer, said the program has been successful in clearing up nuisance properties. Nuisance properties typically have large accumulations of garbage and debris throughout the property. These properties become problematic in that they can attract animals and insects as well as become fire hazards. However, one of the most not...

  • Preschool starts: kids ready to learn basics

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Sep 3, 2014

While walking up to the Sweetwater County Child Developmental Center Tuesday morning, parents and children were bustling to get into the building. Many were stopping to take pictures outside of the building for their child's first day of school. For some children, this was the first time going to a school and being away from their parents. Some children just ran into the room as if they had always been there, others clung to their mother's legs not sure what was going to happen next; while some...

  • Volunteer teaches bracelet making

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Sep 3, 2014

It was an hour of fun and talking for those who attended one of the Mission at Castle Rock Convalescent Center's craft programs. On Friday morning, about six residents were painting their nails, having someone paint them or making their own beaded bracelets. Some did both. Kathy Elliott, a volunteer who runs a craft program about every Friday, has been volunteering to host a craft time. "I got so attached to people when my mom was here that I just couldn't stay away," Elliott said. Elliott alway...

  • Woman promotes children's book

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Sep 3, 2014

Deciding what to write a book about can become overwhelming, but for former Green River resident Karen Cotton this was not the case. Writing and taking photos was something Cotton had always done. Cotton can still remember when she developed an interest in photography. She was seven-years-old and in the Girl Scouts. She used a camera for some Girl Scouts project and never stopped using one. Cotton said she was one of the fortunate children who always had a nice camera, which was usually given to her by her parents or grandparents. At 18,...
