Alcohol is a fine thing. Really, we don’t mind it. In fact, we’re pretty sure enjoying cool margarita on a warm night is a great summertime experience. However, a problem exists when someone has too much to drink. It’s a problem we all have responsibility in curtailing. According to statistics from the Governor’s Council on Impaired Driving, the number of alcohol-related crashes taking place in Wyoming was 978 in 2012 and 876 in 2013. Of those crashes, 393 involved injuries in 2012 while 353 involved injuries in 2013. Of course, alcohol...

  • A traveler's bucket list of locations

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Aug 27, 2014

In just a matter of hours, I will be heading to Salt Lake City and then on to northern California. I'm pretty excited about the journey. I've spent a lot of time in southern California, but have never seen the upper part of the state so it should be pretty darn glorious. It has been somewhere I've always wanted to go, I just have never gotten around to it. I look forward to walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, going to Alcatraz and driving down Lombard Street, hopefully not throwing up during...

  • An increasing fixation with appearances

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Aug 27, 2014

Over the years, I have noticed that is seems the world, especially this country, seem fixated on what is on the outside. Apparently, I am not the only one who is noticing this because singer and songwriter Colbie Caillat felt it an important enough of an issue to write an entire song about it. In her song “Try” Caillat describes how women in particular do just about anything such as excessive exercising, spending and makeup use to make others accept them. Not only is the wording strong, but the...

  • Fans unite at SLC Comic Con

Bianca Jorgensen, Sweetwater County Library System|Aug 27, 2014

Hello readers. I hope everyone is warm and dry after the unusually wet, cold week we just had. I feel the chill in the air that signifies the onset of autumn and although it is my favorite season, it is sad to see our brief summer season draw to a close. There are many traditional reasons a person my enjoy fall: sweaters, the changing colors of the leaves, football, the approach of the holiday season, and, of course, pumpkin-flavored everything. I, however, have another reason to greet autumn with excitement. Milling through a huge crowd, I not...

  • A short note about the birth announcements

    David Martin, Editor|Aug 27, 2014

Readers have probably noticed we have a very long list of birth announcements this week in the Green River Star. The list, which comes in at more than 1,800 words, are the names of births taking place at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County for the past several months. While it would be easy to shrug one’s shoulders and blame the late publication of the announcements as an email issue, the fact of the matter is that I’m the one to blame. The issue is resolved and should have been done muc...

  • Letter: Corrals cost city money

    Aug 27, 2014

Dear Editor, I must admit to a mistake in my letter where I compared the developed airport with the horse corrals. I mentioned that I had learned of the details of the leasing of each corral from my sitting in council meetings when the city council voted on leases to horse owners. I made the assumption that the very low rent of $159 was a monthly rent. I’ve since been made aware by people who lease one or more horse corrals, that no it is not a monthly rent, it is a yearly rent. The City of Green River rents its 144 horse corrals for $159.00 p...
