Wolves Softball splits doubleheader with Rock Springs Tigers

The Green River Wolves Softball team hosted their first home games of the season last Thursday against the Rock Springs Tigers. It's always an exciting game to watch when the two rivalry teams go head-to-head.

During the first game, Green River didn't score in the first two innings and Rock Springs had the lead 4-0. In the third inning, Izzy Kelley hit an inside-the-park home run, which brought in three runs. Green River scored four more runs, taking the lead away from Rock Springs. In the fourth inning, Green River scored 10 more runs and won the game with a final score of 17-5.

Leading the team were Terryn Avery with three runs, Haidyn Terry and Kodi Allred with two runs each, and Chacee Shiner, Izzy Kelley, Gina Barajas with one run each. Terry pitched five innings, giving up five hits and five runs, striking out seven and walking four players. Green River had 19 hits during the game, including hits from Kelley, Terry, Shiner, Barajas, Allred, Avery and Ally White.

"We were behind," explained Head Coach Blair McEndaffer. "The girls just kept battling back and got on a streak and Rock Springs couldn't stop us."

During the second game against Rock Springs, it was a closer competition, with both teams fighting hard for the win. Green River out-hit Rock Springs during the game, but it wasn't enough to take the win. Unfortunately, Green River had the opportunity to win the game but fell short by one run and lost with a final score of 3-4.

Avery lead the team with a home run to left field that brought in two runs, along with hits from Izzy Kelley and Abby Harrison. Avery pitched over two innings, giving up one hit and three runs, striking out two and walking four players. Emma Riech also pitched during the game, giving up no runs or hits, striking out three and walking one player.

Coach McEndaffer is very proud of the girls for pushing through and never giving up. She says these girls don't quit and they'll fight to the end no matter what the score is, so never count them out.

This season the Wolves are asking the community to help them with their Hits Against Hunger Food Drive. During their homes games, donations will be accepted at the Veterans Field and will be given to the Food Bank of Sweetwater County. Donations the food bank can accept include perishable foods (meat - as long as it has been professionally packaged and dairies, refrigerated and freezer food items) non-perishable foods (canned foods, dry packaged food items), baby food/diapers, children's books, and personal items (shampoo, toothpaste, soap).

Green River will host games against the Cody Fillies on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. On Saturday, Green River will host games against the Worland Warriors at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
