Track and Field team looks to build on success

Practice started last Monday, March 4, for the Green River High School Girls and Boys Outdoor Track and Field participants, right after the end of the Indoor Track season. Many of the Indoor Track athletes were joined by new athletes that participated in other winter sports.

This season, according to Head Track Coach Dan Hansen, the team has 58 kids out, with the number of boys and girls split down the middle. Coach Hansen believes this is a good balance for both squads. The biggest class is the junior class with 19 athletes, along with five seniors and the rest consisting of freshmen and sophomores.

The team also includes 10 of the 14 athletes that qualified for the State track meet last year, giving them some good veteran leaders. Those returning are Lillian Allsion, Sophia Arnold, MaKynzee Bagshaw, Mikayla Dockter, Trace Erdman, Madison Murdock, Izzy Murdock, Lily Murdock, Christian Oswald and Chris Wilson.

Others who have a possibility of qualifying for State according to Coach Hansen are Nicole Wilson, Ellie Quiroz, Vivian Murray, Jared Comeer, Chaz Helmandollar, Raab Poignee, Eva Murray, Lydia Westenskow and Keegan Gailey.

According to Coach Hansen, Junior Chris Wilson had an outstanding State Outdoor Track and Field meet last year and is looking at building on that with his goals for this season. Also according to Coach Hansen, Lillian Allison, also a junior, was fourth in the Shot Put last year and the Girls 4X800 Relay was eighth.

Hansen indicates they are working on improving on last year's accomplishments with these and other athletes on the team, having set their sights on qualifying and competing at the State Outdoor Track meet on May 1 in Casper.

The team will also once again be hosting the Green River High School Triangular Track and Field meet starting at 10 a.m. on April 19. Coach Hansen encourages the community to come out and support our athletes!

The first Track and Field meet of the season will be this Friday and Saturday at Lone Peak High School in Highland, Utah.
