Lady Wolves fall against Evanston and bounce back against Jackson Hole

The Green River Lady Wolves traveled to Evanston to play a conference game against the Evanston Red Devils last weekend.

In the first quarter, it was a close game for both teams as Green River scored 13 points to Evanston's 14. In the second quarter, Green River had a hard time finding the basket and slipped behind, scoring four points to Evanston's 10. Green River stepped up their game in the third quarter, scoring 18 points to Evanston's 12. In the fourth quarter, Green River scored another 12 points to Evanston's 13 points. With every point being crucial in the game, Green River lost after not being able to sink their shots in the first half of the game. The Lady Wolves lost the game with a final score of 47-49.

Addison Demaret led the team with 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Nicole Wilson also had eight points, seven rebounds, three steals and three blocks, along with Madison Moffatt and Isabel Vasco with seven points each.

Head Coach Rick Carroll believes the loss against Evanston was due to the girls playing sluggishly and not being able to play tough defense consistently. During the first half, he said they only made four out of 30 shots and were nine for 21 from the free throw line.

"We put no points up and shot very badly and we weren't doing a good job playing defense," explained Coach Carroll.

He said it was frustrating losing the game to Evanston because it was an important conference game that they wanted to win to keep up with Star Valley. Losing the game could set them up differently for Regionals.

On Saturday, the Lady Wolves hosted a conference game against the Jackson Hole Broncs.

The Lady Wolves played great defense and offensive from the start of the game. In the first quarter, Green River scored 28 points to Jackson's three. Green River continued to own the second quarter, scoring 12 more points to Jackson's nine. In the third quarter, Green River scored 18 more points, controlling the lead while Jackson scored six points. During the fourth quarter, both teams only scored three points each. Playing on their home court, Green River dominated the game and won with a final score of 61-21.

Isabel Vasco led the team with 17 points, six assists and five steals. Demaret also had 11 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five blocks.

Coach Carroll said the girls started the game strong against Jackson.

"It's funny how you make a couple of shots and then all of a sudden everybody has a bunch of confidence again," he said.

The girls did a great job of rebounding the ball and were shooting very well. They did what they needed to during the game and they got a good lead on Jackson that helped them win.

After the girls varsity game, Coach Carroll was recognized for 400 wins during his coaching career. He was very surprised how many family members were able to attend when he was honored with the award.

"It felt really good," he explained. "It's just a testament that I've really enjoyed doing that part of this job. I've enjoyed coaching and going to practice and working with both the boys and girls. It's the reason I've done it for so long and it's a lot of good memories."

Coach Carroll hopes the team can play hard and with confidence during their next two games against Star Valley and Rock Springs.

The Lady Wolves host a conference game against the Star Valley Braves on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and host another game against the Rock Springs Tigers on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Green River will be hosting the 4A West Regionals in Green River on Thursday, February 29 through Saturday, March 2.
