Wolves football remains undefeated, now 3-0

The Wolves’ depth showed through once more as they came up against a tough Torrington team with less than 20 players on their football team.

But with one of Wyoming’s most dominating linemen, finishing the game 28-14, and earning another win.

Torrington showcased two-time All State and the 2015 3A South East Conference Defensive Player of the Year Friday night. Drew Wilson was able to keep his team in the game with outstanding play on both sides of the ball.

Green River got the ball to start the game and were forced to punt early on. In Torrington’s first offensive series, they picked up one first down, but eventually had to punt after some good defense by the Wolves, led by three tackles from Blake Waite, who had a big defensive game.

It took Green River just three plays to march down and score with big plays, consisting of a 71-yard run by quarterback Chance Hofer, followed by a pass from Hofer to running back Drew Wilson for the score. Hofer kicked the PAT and the Wolves were up 7-0.

When Torrington got the ball back, they mixed several runs and passes ending in a 13-yard pass completion for a touchdown. The Trailblazers then attempted a two-point conversion with a pass, which was completed to give Torrington the lead at 8-7 at the start of the second quarter.

After just two offensive plays, Hofer was intercepted and Torrington got the ball right back. The Trailblazers marched down the field, making a couple first downs, but eventually was stopped by the Wolves defense to end the half.

Neither team could do much at the start the second half as tough defensive play on both sides of the ball dominated. It appeared Green River’s depth and speed eventually started to wear down the Trailblazers as Green River got a couple of tough runs by Candon Croft before Hofer connected with Croft for a 49-yard pass reception. Wilson then took the ball in from 15 yards out and his second touchdown of the game. A PAT by Hofer resulted in a 14-8 lead for Green River.

Torrington got the ball back, but Green River’s defense toughened up to stop them with big plays by William Harvey, Waite, Wilson and the rest of the Wolves defense. The teams again exchanged a series of possessions with no score. Green River started it’s next drive from the 9-yard line and marched the length of the field with big plays, including a 37-yard pass from Hofer to Devan Love, a 10-yard run by Wilson, a 17-yard pass to Wilson, a 12-yard pass completion to Croft and concluded by a 17-yard run for the touchdown by Croft. The PAT was good, this time by Chase Stoeger. making the score 21-8.

Green River stopped Torrington on its next series and got the ball back and scored again with big plays from Wilson, Croft and Hofer and a 24-yard reception by Cole White.

Wilson took the ball in from 12 yards out behind excellent blocking by the offensive line for his third touchdown of the game, to go up 28-8.

Despite being out manned, Torrington came back late in the game to score their final touchdown. Torrington again went for two points, but were stopped by the Wolves swarming defense with the score being 28-14.

The No. 2 ranked Green River Wolves, earned a hard-fought victory on the road against the forth-ranked Trailblazers.

The Wolves’ hard hitting defense lead by Waite was able to get Torrington off the field in the second half according to head coach Don Maggi.

“(The defense) enabled Green River’s offense to get into a rhythm, scoring 21 points in the second half,” Maggi said.

Maggi said the game was physical and they were pleased with the effort, especially with the extended road trip to Torrington.

Maggi said the team came out of the non-conference season 3-0 and healthy, showing improvement each week. However, Maggi said the team now has to turn its attention to the conference season, where the next five games will determine the playoff bracket.

Maggi further noted that Powell, Green River’s next opponent, is a very good team and will come to town ready to play.

“We need to prepare well,” Maggi said.
