Celebrating Dr. Seuss

Each year, communities across America celebrate with the National Education Association’s signature program, NEA’s Read Across America. Working with libraries, schools and community organizations this program focuses on motivating children and teens to read by hosting events that celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.

But why celebrate on just one day when we could celebrate more? Encouraging a lifelong joy of reading is part of the library’s mission:

The Sweetwater County Library System improves the quality of life in our communities by:

- Helping individuals obtain information,

- Providing materials that are reliable and current,

- Encouraging a lifelong joy of reading and learning for all, especially children.

So the Sweetwater County Library has turned Read Across America into a week-long celebration.

We kick off this week of reading fun Feb. 27 from 1-3 p.m. when the Sweetwater County Library will transform into the land of DR. Seuss.

With the help of the Cat in the Hat, every corner of the library will feature a craft, learning activity or hidden picture game.

Children who find each of the hidden Seuss items will receive a special I Love Reading prize from our prize basket.

Also featured is a seusserific performance of “Green Eggs and Ham” at 1:30, 2, and 2:30 p.m. Children are welcome to play with some of our favorite Seuss characters in this reader’s theatre.

Then on March 4 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. the Sweetwater County Library will celebrate the end of this amazing reading celebration week with a Book Bingo bonanza. Youth Services librarians will share some of our favorite picture books as well as a craft corner and snacks. Everyone wins at Book Bingo and everyone wins when we love to read.

If that’s not enough, we also have terrific events going on at the two libraries in Rock Springs as well. Dress in your favorite Dr. Seuss-themed attire and bring the kids to the Dr. Seuss Party from 4 to 5 p.m.

March 2 at White Mountain Library, 2935 Sweetwater Drive, or join the Dr. Seuss celebration from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., March 3 at Rock Springs Library, 400 C Street.

Watch for the Cat in the Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2 at the library, you never know where they will show up.
