Wrestlers take 3rd in Evanston

The Green River High School varsity and junior varsity wrestling teams did well at the Evanston Invitational tournament this weekend.

They came away with tournament wins after losing their first dual of the year against Wasatch High School Thursday, in Heber City, Utah, with a score of 55-18.

"The dual on Thursday was the first competition of the year for us, but I think we showed some good things and fought hard against the top team in Utah," head coach Marshall Rhodes said.

The Wolves may have lost their first dual of the year, but they came back swinging at the tournament in Evanston the following day.

A multitude of teams competed at the tournament, from Wyoming, Utah and Nevada. GRHS varsity wrestling came away with third place in the tournament, finishing with 189 points. Green River placed at the tournament 14 points less than the tournament champions, Bear River, Utah.

Many varsity wrestlers placed well at the tournament.

First place wrestlers were Cyro Montoya, Shandon Welsh and Dylan VanGieson.

Second place winners were Caleb Nathan, Gage Byers, Kaycee Cochrane and Jacob Olsen.

Third place wrestlers were Edgar Alatorre and Brendan Hopkins.

Fourth place was Jacob Mortensen, Blake Waite and Gabe Bunderman.

Fifth place was Ira Dickinson.

"Overall I am pleased with our performance this weekend," Rhodes said. "There are some very important things we need to fix immediately but we have the ability to do so if we focus and work hard at correcting them."

Rhodes said even though the Junior varsity wrestling team did not keep score, they were toward the top of their division as well.

Junior varsity wrestlers who placed in first were Justin Flores and James McCarter.

Second place was Tanner Adam.

Third place wrestlers were Talbert Bowen, Dan Mondragon, Garrett Harris and Justin Rubalcaba.

Sixth place was Ethan Irons.

"We had some new wrestlers really show some potential and desire to compete and that is exciting," he said. "Our experienced group wrestled pretty well but have many mistakes to correct."

Rhodes said the team needs to get in better shape and there are things that need to be improved. He's excited to fix mistakes and see the teams' improvements in their upcoming match in Colorado this weekend.
