Student project tags area fish

Dear Editor,

We would like to inform the city that Expedition Academy and other Green River schools, including Green River High School and Lincoln Middle School, are participating in the Adopt-a-Trout program here in Green River.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department, along with the local Trout Unlimited chapter have tagged 22 brown trout and 18 burbot (ling with small radio transmitters. Twelve more burbot will be tagged this fall in the Green River arm of Flaming Gorge. The goal for the program is to find out where the burbot are spawning so we can decrease their population, along with identifying ways to improve the brown trout population. In recent years, the brown trout population has decreased as the burbot population has increased in the Green River from Flaming Gorge Reservoir to the Fontenelle Dam.

The tags placed in the fish are not worth money like those placed in fish during fishing tournaments. The visible portion of the tag is only a small wire, roughly 4-5 inches, sticking out of the fish near the anal fin.

If you catch one of these fish we would appreciate it if you would return it back to the water alive.

If you catch and kill the fish please return the tags to Game and Fish in Green River.

Thank you for your time and cooperation.
