Weather doesn't stop GR farmers market

The sky was gray but it didn't stop the community from checking out the Green River Farmers Market.

The first farmers market of the summer was last week. There were quite a few local vendors as well as visiting vendors. About 32 vendors signed up with 23 in attendance. Many different types of products were being sold all the way from fresh fruit and vegetables to woodwork to soaps. The produce vendors are always a community favorite, as well as the Daily Knead and Pink Sink Luxuries.

"Crazy Ladies Vanilla was a huge hit with her vanilla that is made right here in Green River," URA Main Street director Jennie Melvin said. Running Water Farms also sold out of their raw milk.

Stan Hobbs from Littleton, Colo. was a first-timer at the Green River market. He sold European cuisine that he and his wife Gaby Berben prepared.

"They told me it can get pretty windy here," Hobbs said as his paper bags started to take flight in the gusts. "I think I'm about to see what I'm not prepared for."

Some of the vendors were waiting to put their items out due to the storm. Others were physically holding their tents down waiting for the storm to pass. Even with the storm, the vendors were cheerful and happy to be there.

Several members of the community came out to support the farmers market. Many customers had been looking forward to the market all summer while others just happened to drive by.

"The kids and I didn't know what was going on, so we just decided to stop and check it out," Green River resident Jennifer Maez said.

"The turnout was excellent despite the rain," Melvin said.

The rain did stop several people from attending the market, but it didn't stop the market from being a success. The farmers market will continue every Wednesday through Sept. 9 from 4-7 p.m. Melvin said the amount of vendors will increase as well as the variety of products.

"Every week should be a little different from the week before," Melvin said. There will be more than 35 vendors throughout the summer.

"This market season will be the best yet," Melvin said.
