Family plants flowers for Green River

Laura and Lily Harris plant flowers along Flaming Gorge Way, as a family volunteer project. They planted the flowers with their mother Marsha Harris.

“Usually the whole family is down here,” Marsha said.

“As a family, we do a lot of volunteer projects,” Laura said.

The Harris family has been voluntarily planting flowers for the city for six years now. The city’s Main Street organization buys the flowers and supplies and they plant the flowers.

“We harvest some of the seeds. These are seeds we harvest every year and we plant these along with it. Last year, the Merigolds kept the deer away so we’re gonna hope for that again this year. The deer are crazy. It’s like their salad,” Harris said. “They don’t eat Merigolds.”

Harris said the experience of planting the flowers every year is nice and laid back. They started planting the flowers because they heard an ad on the radio to water the city flowers.

Harris found if they plant the flowers correctly and fertilize them, they have a much better year.

“We give them a good start and they look much better,” Harris said.
