Green River splits with rival, look to Casper matchups

Despite a heartbreaking 3-2 loss last Thursday to rival Rock Springs, the Sweetwater Cup belongs to the Green River High School soccer team.

After splitting the season series with the Tigers, the Wolves recaptured the cup with a higher number of total goals. Green River won the first game of the series 6-0 last month at home.

“We are proud to have the Sweetwater Cup; it was not how we wanted it to go down, but we have regained it,” head coach Chris Bieber said.

The Wolves had a 2-1 second half lead last week against Rock Springs, but two late Tiger goals pushed them to victory.

Bieber said the team’s level of intensity hurt them in the second half.

This week, Green River (7-5-1, 3-3 4A West) will travel to play Natrona (8-2-1, (6-1 4A West) and Kelly Walsh (3-9, 2-5 4A West). The Wolves defeated Kelly Walsh at home last month, but lost a 2-1 nail biter to the Mustangs.

“We are getting back to the basics and get our personnel healthy,” Bieber said.
