Green River shuts down Evanston

At halftime of their season opener against Evanston, Green River High School girl’s soccer coach Tracy Wyant and her staff talked to the team about how they needed to talk to each other more and have better ball movement.

The team listened. After scoring one goal in the first half, Green River answered back with four second half goals on their way to a 5-0 victory.

“They went out in the second half and applied everything we talked about and it was night and day between the halves. “They started playing soccer the way they’re supposed to,” Wyant said.

Green River junior McKenzie Lucas scored the lone first half goal for the Wolves at the 14 minute mark.

Wyant said it took awhile for the team to get rid of their nerves.

“It was the first game of the season and we had to blow some dust off and figure some things out.”

It took the Lady Wolves only four minutes to score in the second when Payton Bartlett scored on an assist from Lucas.

It was a huge game for Lucas, who scored her second goal of the game at the 55 minute mark.

Freshman Chezney Mamalis scored the final two Green River goals on assists from Lucas and Lexi Vaught.

“They just needed some adjustments. They went out there and played pretty good in the second half,” Wyant said.
