Two more 1st-place finishes

Once again, the Green River High School Speech and Debate team comes out on top.

In the past two weeks, the team competed in the Evanston and Natrona County Tournaments.

In the Evanston tourney, Green River finished first with 96 points, Rock Springs grabbed second with 54 points and Kelly Walsh took third with 38 points.

“This was one of our smaller meets, but there were several competitive teams in attendance,” assistant coach Rich Percifield said. “Our team won the team sweepstakes with balanced scoring from a variety of students. Rock Springs continues to improve, but we are happy to have the competition as it pushes our students to work hard.”

During the Evanston competition, the students learned how to compete without some of their key performers in attendance, Percifield said.

“The team stayed strong and others picked up the slack,” he said. “The kids are showing an amazing ability to stay strong and continue to give great performances. We will, however, give them some rest the week after Natrona.”

“Our public forum and policy debaters were very strong at this meet,” Percifield said. “Policy debaters finished first and second. Public forum debaters took first and third. The team also took first and second in Congress and Colt Parson took first in humorous.

In the Natrona County Tournament, GRHS had to compete against 36 other schools, but they did not let that intimidate them and walked away with another first-place sweepstakes trophy.

GRHS grabbed first with 101 points, Cheyenne East took second with 44 points and Cheyenne Central took third.

“This is the most difficult and largest all Wyoming school attended tournament that we compete in; 36 schools were in attendance,” head coach Carina Stulken said. “This tournament gives us a lot of information about how competitive we can be in different events as we head towards state.”

So far, the team is seeing its biggest competition from Cheyenne East, Cheyenne Central, Kelly Walsh, Rock Springs and Natrona.

“We are giving kids a break this week from practice since we don’t travel this weekend. This is a very long season and students need time to recharge and spend time with family,” Stulken said. “Next week, we will come back and set goals for the last few tournaments as we head rapidly towards the end of our season. We will travel to Riverton to compete next weekend.”

During this tourney, Sarah Sullivan, a four-year senior on our team, won poetry over more than 100 competitors in that field. The team also closed out the final round of policy debate winning first, second and third place in that event.
